During a CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman announced that Lord and Miller are taking Spidey back to his graphic roots with this first-of-its-kind animated feature which will be released in 2018. But at the same time, he made it clear that this project is going to be independent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige produced live Spider-Man action film, which is slated for release on 28 July 2017.
Now that the Sony boss has made it clear that the animated version will be an independent entity, it will definitely give Lord and Miller a lot of scope to explore new angles. It will also give the makers the complete creative freedom to revamp, recreate or give Spider-Man a whole new twist.
Could this be a beginning of a brand new franchise? Will they be able to make it as huge as "The Lego Movie"? You never know.
But right now, all that we know is that the duo will not direct this animated version of Spider-Man and that they are busy writing "The Lego Movie" sequel that will also be released in 2018.
