In recent years India has emerged as a major back office for Hollywood animation. Now, with an original animated feature, The World of Goopi and Bagha, receiving a world premiere at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival or TIFF.
Presented by Children's Film Society India, the film is designed and directed by Mumbai-based animator Shilpa Ranade, who has a day job as a professor at IIT-Powai’s Industrial Design Centre.
The unique vibrancy of Goopi and Bagha's world comes courtesy of Ranade, a veteran children's content creator and professor of animation, who enriches the film's painterly style with a technique involving cloth textures that lends a distinctive look and feel. Of course, music is instrumental to the narrative, and the film boasts lyrics by Rohit Gahlowt and original songs composed by 3 Brothers & A Violin that are sure to keep you singing and tapping along with the lovable musicians. The World of Goopi and Bagha is an inventive and heartwarming film full of twists, humour, spirit, and kindness.
Shilpa Ranade is an associate professor at the Industrial Design Centre, IIT in Mumbai. She is a book illustrator and animator whose directing credits include the short animations Mani's Dying (95), The Harvest (95), The Childhood of Krishna (00), Naja Goes to School (00), and The Mouse with Seven Tails (06).
